Overview of the Federal Aid Process

Below is the general process of receiving federal financial aid at BYU.

  1. Complete the FAFSA for the appropriate aid year

Once submitted, it takes 2-3 business days for BYU to receive it.

  1. Check My Financial Center for Tasks and/or YMessages

Click on each Task for instructions on how to complete it.

  1. Complete verification, if required

Not all students are required to verify their FAFSA information. Submit requested                         documents, asked for through Tasks, ASAP, as it may take several weeks to process.

  1. Accept/Decline awards

Once all Tasks are complete, you will receive a YMessage outlining your award eligibility.             Pell Grants are automatically accepted for you. Loans must be accepted.

If you are a first time loan borrower you will be assigned two additional Tasks (Promissory           Note and Entrance Counseling) that must be done prior to receiving the loan.

  1. Disbursement to student account

Aid posts to your student account 7-10 days prior to the beginning of a semester/term.

  1. Refund to bank account

Any excess aid will be refunded on the third day of classes. Set up Direct Deposit (not                  payroll) through My Financial Center to receive refunds faster.
